Finished!

This year's Achievement Tests are packaged up and ready to be shipped! Things will be getting back normal. Tomorrow is May 1st. It is hard to believe the school year is coming to an end.

I may be in and out for the next few days, so my daily blog may be short to say the least. My mother is in the hospital and I find myself there quite a bit.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Rainy Day

Looks like today is going to be a bit soggy! Let's hope the weather shapes up before the week is over. May is only a few days away. While students are permitted to wear shorts beginning on Thursday, please keep in mind that our building tends to be a bit on the chilly side early in the morning. Please do not let your children decide if they should or should not wear shorts. As always, shorts must be worn at an acceptable length. Thank you for your cooperation.

4th Graders will take their Writing Achievement Test tomorrow, April 29th. This link can come in handy. As I spoke to the 4th graders this morning, I reminded all to get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast tomorrow. It is a proven fact that students well rested and who have had breakfast score better than those who are tired and hungry.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Earth Day!

Today was a great day! The weather could not have been nicer and led to our courtyard being a very busy place. Representatives from Home Depot were on hand to plant gardens with each student. The gardens will be heading home soon! Our friends from the Vindicator were here, too. Look for a story soon.

Thank you to Home Depot, Focus Contracted Services, Elliott's Garden Center and Blasco Commercial Services for their generosity. Be sure to check out the pictures from the greenhouse and Earth Day!

Take A Look!

Please try to attend tomorrow evening's Elementary Art Show at our school. A lot of hard work went into putting this event together. Our Art teacher, Tami Johnson, and Poland Union parent Diane Becherer have done an amazing job. Thank you to all of the volunteers who spent time hanging the work of Poland's students.

We have made some real progress in our school's courtyard. By tomorrow, there will be pictures posted. Be sure to check them out! This latest project would not be possible without the leadership of one of our building's most supportive fathers. Jason Smith of Focus Contracted Services has worked exceptionally hard and is excited as I am to see the finished product. If you can make it to tomorrow's show, be sure to take a look!

Congratulations!

Our school recently participated in the annual “Earth Day to Earth Day Placemat Contest” sponsored by the Mahoning County Commissioners’ Reuse and Recycling Division and Dominion. For the past four years, Poland North Elementary School has had a large number of students participate in and win honors in this contest. This year is no exception! Like in the past, our school had more winners than any other K-4 elementary school in the county! This is quite an accomplishment and one that we should all be proud of. This year's winners from North are pictured.

Mr. Masucci

Be looking for a letter heading home later this week regarding our Make-A-Wish efforts. It will also be posted on the site. I am proud to report that we have reached our $6,000.00 goal. Within a few weeks, our students will be learning about the young lady whose wish will be coming true thanks to the their extreme generosity and that of our staff, families and community! Congratulations!

Mother/Daughter Night!

Our Mother/Daughter Night was a huge success. Thank you to Mrs. Blasko and her committee for another job well done. LA-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries provided two of the evenings "best seats". In addition to their generosity, Cinema South donated the popcorn! Thank you.

The girls seemed to have a great time and enjoyed the movie, ice cream and popcorn. It was a great evening for our girls! Thanks to all those who were able to come.

Be sure to check out the pictures!

A Quick Week!

With so much going on, this week has gone by very quickly. Tomorrow marks the end of the third grading period. Report cards will come home next Friday.

I spent some time this afternoon with our 4th graders. Using our InterWrite Board, we took a look at some sample questions from previous achievement tests. The link to the site is found on this very page. Look in the upper left hand corner. It is a great site and one that shows different types of student responses. Please take a look. It is great for 3rd graders, too!

Tomorrow is Mother/Daughter Night. LA-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries will be dropping off recliners that will make a great night even better for 2 lucky winners! Bruster's ice cream and popcorn will be on hand. Hope to see you there.

Thank you,
Mr. Masucci

A Huge Success!

Wow! I just got home from tonight's Father/Son Night! Thank you to Mrs. Blasko and her committee for putting together one incredible evening. The turnout was fantastic. By far, PSHS basketball players Bryan, Ben and Ben were the hit! Too often you hear about what teenagers do wrong. It may not be as common to hear about what they do right. Tonight three young men volunteered their time and created lasting memories for young kids from their community and, for two of them, their old school! Thank you guys. You are appreciated for what you can do on the court...... and off.

I cannot forget to thank the dads, grandpas and other important men who made the night a success. You are appreciated, too.

Thank you,
Mr. Masucci

P.S. Look for pictures on the site soon!

Today's News

Our 2nd Graders had a great time on their field trip to Schwebel's Bakery. From what I understand, they were very well behaved and enjoyed the tour. Thank you to all of the chaperones who were able to assist Mrs. Saculla and Mrs. Gunn.

Tonight's Father/Son Night is going to be great! Plan on arriving at 5:30 p.m. Hope to see you there.

A Great Performance!

Congratulations to our Kindergarten and 3rd Graders! Tonight's performance was absolutely wonderful. I would like to thank Miss Gura, Mrs. Santangelo, Miss Speece, Miss Chrissy, Miss Bridget, Mrs. Hay, Mrs. Baldwin and Dr. Szabo for their hard work. Our students looked and sounded great!

Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who were able to make it! Know that you are appreciated.

Thank you,
Mr. Masucci

Correction!

The plans for today's walk just didn't materialize with so much going on this morning. Consequently, we will be walking tomorrow afternoon. Let's hope for a nice day.

If you are planning on attending this evening's performance, plan on being here early. Parking will be at a premium. Not only do we have our own crowd coming, but it is baseball season! Students are to stay with their parents in the gym upon their arrival. They are not to go to the classrooms until their teachers instruct them to do so. Thank you for your cooperation.

Our Father/Son Night is scheduled for tomorrow evening. It is going to be a wonderful event! Hope to see you there. Don't forget about Mother/Daughter Night on Friday!

Thank you,
Mr. Masucci

A Beautiful Day!

Wow! The weather certainly has changed for the better. Since tomorrow's forecast is a good one, we'll take advantage and walk around the school's property. Be sure to have your child wear appropriate shoes.

Thank you to those who made it to today's PTO meeting. Look for the minutes to be posted soon. Although the school year is winding down, there are many great events and activities planned. Thank you PTO!

The big news of the day........a field trip for the entire school! On Thursday, May 8th, all students and teachers will be heading off to Powers Auditorium to see a production of Disney's "High School Musical"! Although the cost of each ticket is $7.00, students are asked to send in only $2.00. A permission slip and more details will be sent home this week.

Don't forget about tomorrow's Spring Program for Kindergarten and 3rd Grade students. Plan on arriving early. Parking will be an issue. Students are to remain in the gym with their parents until instructed otherwise. There will be a dress rehearsal tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

Mr. Masucci

Growing by Leaps and Bounds!

The greenhouse has become a very busy place! Our students have been hard at work transplanting small "plugs", watering and preparing soil. There is nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty! Inside the greenhouse you will find, herb gardens, wave petunias, inpatients, begonias and tomato plants. Within a day or two, there will be a group of pictures you can check out on this site. I will update the pictures regularly so you can see how quickly the plants are growing!

Thank you,
Mr. Masucci

Upcoming Events

In addition to our upcoming Kindergarten and 3rd Grade Program, our PTO has two events planned for next week. On Wednesday, April 9th, Father/Son Night will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Plan for a night of channel surfing, games, fun and food! Papa John's pizza, chips and ice cream will be served! Friday, April 11th will be an evening for just the girls! Mother/Daughter Movie Night will begin at 6:00 p.m. Wear your pajamas, bring sleeping bags and prepare to have a good time while watching the movie on our giant screen! LA-Z-Boy Furniture gallery will be providing comfortable recliners for two of our luckiest guests! The Bruster's ice cream cart and freshly popped popcorn will be here, too!

More Great News!

Several weeks ago, all students in grades 1-4 worked at home and in school on their entries for the Green Team's Placemat Contest. I am proud to say that our school had more winners in grades 1-4 than any other school! This is quite an accomplishment and one that we should all be proud of. Congratulations to Ben, Kaitlyn, Michael and Kelsey for receiving honors. However, all should be congratulated for their efforts!

A note will be sent home tomorrow with all afternoon kindergarten students asking their parents to bring them to school shortly before 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8th for a dress rehearsal. Their spring program will be that same evening at 6:00 p.m. and every practice helps! Once here, the afternoon students will be able to stay the remainder of the day. They will be able to bring a packed lunch and eat with Miss Gura in their classroom. More details will be included in the letter.

Mr. Masucci
