Another Busy Day!

The next few weeks are going to be very busy with quite a few special events taking place. A short meeting will take place tonight for Father/Son Night volunteers at the Poland Library. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Another wonderful group will be meeting tonight to discuss the school's preliminary plans for this summer's "Relay for Life". Once again, Poland North Elementary School will have a team. Last year's event was an enormous success. Our school had a lot to do with that! Team North pulled together to raise over $14,000.00 for the American Cancer Society. With all that we have done this year, our participation in this year's festivities and fundraising efforts will be limited. I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Be Safe!

I shared a story this morning about one of our students who was involved in a bicycle accident yesterday. Like may others, he headed home from school and proceeded to go outside. He jumped on his bike and started peddling. Before long, something happened and he ended up on the ground. His knee and elbow absorbed some of the blow. He has the bruises and bandages to show for it. However, his head hit the ground, too. Upon entering his house, his family quickly noticed something else was wrong.......He had lost his memory. A frantic trip to the hospital followed. After some time, he regained his memory and was told he could return home. Before leaving, his mother was informed that the bicycle helmet he was wearing absorbed the impact to his head and saved his life. The staff was stunned by the cracks in his helmet. Needless to say, I was thrilled to see him at school today.

After sharing the story, I simply asked all of our students to sit in silence and think about their friend, bikes and helmets. Today's lesson serves as a clear reminder why bicycle helmets should always be worn.

This makes tomorrow's basketball game seem irrelevant, but .......Go DOGS!

Sunshine!

Today was a beautiful day. The snow is melting and signs of spring are all around us. I went into the courtyard this morning a took a few pictures. Within a week or so, our greenhouse will be filled with flowers and vegetables. Our students are going to be very, very busy. Enjoy the pictures.



The Bulldogs will take on the Mooney Cardinals on Saturday. The winner will be declared District Champs and move on to Regional play in Canton next week. We'll have a blue and white day tomorrow. Go DOGS!

Father/Son Night!

Information about the upcoming Father/Son Night is heading home today. It is my fault it didn't come home sooner. I apologize for that. Reservations are due by Friday, March 12th. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Mrs. Orr. Those willing and able to volunteer on that night should be on the lookout for a paper coming home tomorrow. There will be a meeting for volunteers on Monday, March 15th at the Poland Library.

We are just about ready to begin the construction of our shade structure in the courtyard. Let's hope things continue to dry out a bit. Believe or not, the tulips have and crocuses in our courtyard have shown signs of life.

Congratulations to Coach Grisdale, his staff and the basketball team for making to the District Championship. They will play the either Mooney or Struthers Saturday Night at Boardman High School! We'll have a blue and white day on Friday. Go DOGS!

Great Job!

I'd like to congratulate the 27 students who participated in this year's Green Team Placemat Contest. I'm impressed with the quality of the entries. We have some wonderful artists at Poland North Elementary School. Those who entered will receive Chick-fil-A cards and be entered into a drawing to eat dinner at my house. I will randomly pick 1 child from each of the grades that had at least 1 student enter. Unfortunately, there were no entries submitted by our 2nd graders. They and any "official" winners of the contest will join my family for dinner soon.

Mrs. Kaschak and members of her class will be featured tonight on both WKBN and WYTV. A story about the generosity of our school will be shown at 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00. Thanks to Greta Mittereder for taking the time to stop by.

Posters Due!

All Green Team Placemat Contest entries are due tomorrow. I have already received a nice amount and look forward to seeing more turned in tomorrow morning. Be sure entry forms are filled out completely and attached to the back of the poster.


Let's hope our Bulldogs continue their winning ways tonight. They will take on the Niles Red Dragons for the third time this season. Poland was victorious the previous two times they played. If Poland wins, they would play in the District Championship on Saturday, March 13th.

A Nice Day!

Our students are enjoying the new book I started reading during our morning announcements. Ask them what they enjoy most about Fudge, Peter and Tootsie!

The PTO received a very nice certificate from Ohio Senators Bill Harris and Joe Schiavoni today that congratulates its members for being declared a heroes of the Mahoning Valley. Our PTO is one-of-a-kind!

I have more nice news. Our school was recently nominated for the Daily Point of Light Award and passed through the preliminary round of judging. The judges were inspired by our school's community service. To learn more about the award, click here.
