A big thank you to our PTO for decorating and hosting the 4th Grade Recognition Dinner on Tuesday evening. Our gym was transformed by ballons and streamers to add the extra touch to the outstanding
4th grade singing performance. The parents' pride was evident as they watched their child receive their special awards. The night concluded with a video showing the changing years of all our 4th graders. This is such a special night to conclude their time spent at North.

Carnegie Science Center is visiting our school on Thursday, May 31st. They will be holding an all-school assembly followed by 10 stations of hands-on science activities for the students. I am looking for a few more volunteers to help with these stations. If you are available on Thursday from 9:15-12:00 or 12:30-2:00, I would appreciate the help. Please call me at the school or send a note with your child.

Miss Gura's Kindergarten class got their hands dirty today with planting. A big thank you to a local gardening club, Trailwood Gardeners. They made a donation to our school to help beautify it with flowers. The Kindergarten students planted the flowers around our front sign so everyone drviving by would get to enjoy the flowers too!

The High School Seminary Singers paid a visit to our school today. It was a wonderful performance with amazing talent. It was so nice to see the former
North students "all grown-up."
Today, a second grade student was honored during an awards ceremony at the County Courthouse. Her placemat won 1st place in the Green Team contest and will be seen at local restaurants, such as Friendly's. Four of the seven students who won honors were from Poland. Way to go!

A perfect weekend for planting is upon us! The students brought their tomato and green pepper plants home yesterday. They were amazed to see the growth since out Earth Day celebration. Some plants had a hard time fitting in the bags! Let's hope our "green thumbs" will continue and bring us plenty of vegetables to enjoy this summer.

There was a lot of beatuiful singing in North's gym yesterday with a visit from the Western Reserve Opera. Four members presented "Fun With Opera" to the students. They learned about the languages and emotions displayed in opera. The performers also demonstrated the different types of vocals, such as soprano. The students became their favorite zoo animal as the performers sang. The opera was a nice treat to end the day.

Happy Belated Mother's Day to all of our North moms, grandmas, and aunts. The students and I discussed all the responsiblities that a mom has such as: cooking, laundry, driving kids to appointments or practices, and the list goes on. The Act of Kindness will continue the focus on mom. The students are to watch for signs that their mother may need a little extra help and offer their assistance. It is always nice to show appreciation for the "jobs" that moms do!

I would like to send a BIG "Thank you" to all the prents who braved the unfortunate rain yesterday for our walk home.
The students enjoyed getting wet though! All the students got home safely and that is all that matters.
The staff enjoyed a wonderful, delicious luncheon today thanks to our PTO. There were many choices of salads, pastas, and desserts. North staff is so lucky to have such supportive parents.
Today, the first of our "greenhouse plantings" are making their way home. Let's hope they get home with the dirt and plant still in the bag.

The students brought home information about the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. It is an attempt to break the current world record of 64,213,141 minutes read in the summer. The world record attempt began May 1st and continues through August 31st. You will need to help your child log-on to the Scholastic website to register and log the number of minutes read. This reading program can also be combined with the Mahoning County Library Summer program that begins on June 1st. Good luck and enjoy reading with your child!

Tomorrow will be our "walk home from school day"! The weather looks like it will cooperate. It is wonderful to see 70% of our school participating in this day. We have many parents willing to walk neighborhood groups home. If you volunteered, please be here at 2:20. We will start dismissing the walking
groups after all the buses leave. Wear comfortable clothes, shoes and let's hope for sunshine!

Mrs. Saculla's 2nd Graders were busy presenting their biography reports today. The class was dressed as their famous person and many had props. I had the pleasure of learning about two athletes; golfer Arnold Palmer and Celtics player, Paul Pierce. A young hero, Milton Daub, delivered medicine and groceries during a blizzard in 1888. After each presentation, the class was allowed to ask questions about the famous person. The students were very attentive and could share some interesting facts with you this evening.

Our 4th Grade took a fieldtrip today to the Juvenile Justice Center. Mr. Smith took our boys and girls on a tour of the facility. He talked to them about making good choices. He gave examples of situations to help them make the right choice insead of the wrong one. He emphasized that all bad choices have consequences. This is a yearly 4th grade trip that encourages the students to look at their choices and actions as they are gaining their independence.
