Great News!

I am very proud to report that for the 2nd time in 4 years Poland North Elementary School has received the Core Essentials Award. Through our partnership with Chick-fil-A, our students learn about a different character trait each month. Throughout the course of the year, our students, staff, PTO and families have worked hard to build upon those traits. A special thank you goes out to our Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Dalesandro, who is instrumental in making this program such a success.

In 2007, our school was one of only 10 schools in the country to have won. The same holds true today. Judging is not done locally, but in the great state of Georgia. I'll be sharing more details soon. Congratulations everyone! Be proud.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Progress!

Take a moment to check out these pictures from our courtyard. The school's new pond is coming along nicely. Be on the lookout for a note coming home that will explain how each classroom can adopt a fish. On May 6th, our school will be declared a WILD School Site by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. At that time, our classroom will "release" their fish into the wild!

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Drip...Drip!

Despite a rainy day, construction on our school's new pond began early this morning. The PondScape crew dodged the raindrops and made quite a bit of progress. I'll have pictures posted soon.

Please do not forget about Thursday's BOGO Scholastic Book Fair. It will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Elementary Art Show takes place Friday at Poland Union Elementary School from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. If anyone is able to help hang pictures, stop by Union Thursday morning around 9:00 a.m. I know extra hands will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

It's Friday!

Our Achievement Tests wrap up today and will be delivered to our District Office this afternoon. I am very proud of how hard our 3rd and 4th graders worked during this difficult week. I'd like to thank the parents for making sure their children were well rested and prepared. I hope you enjoy the weekend.

On Thursday, April 29th, our PTO will be hosting a BOGO Scholastic Book Fair in the school's gym from 3:00-6:00. I hope you are able to make it. All proceeds from this annual event will go toward updating our school and classroom libraries.

If the weather cooperates, construction on the school's new pond will begin Monday morning. I'll be sure to keep you posted.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

1 More Day!

4th graders can take a collective sigh of relief now that their Achievement Tests are finished. Our 3rd graders will do the same tomorrow. I am happy to report the all tests will be boxed up and ready to be shipped out tomorrow!

I have information about a black dog that was recently discovered near Peachtree Ct. If you know anything about a missing pooch, please let me know.

Thanks to our friends at Kohl's all of our students were able to spend a portion of Earth Day outside planting flowers and vegetables. It was an amazing team of volunteers that brightened up our day. Thank you!

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

2 Down.......1 to Go!

Another day of Achievement Testing has come to an end! Our 3rd graders worked very hard this morning. I am very proud of them. By this time tomorrow, 4th graders will be completely finished with their tests. Please make sure your little test-takers get to bed early and have a good breakfast.

Don't forget about tonight's 4th Grade Recognition Meeting at the Poland Library. Mrs. Kluchar has some wonderful ideas about this year's event.

Thanks,

Mr. Masucci

1 Day Down......3 to go!

Our 4th graders have one day of testing under their belts. Everything seemed to go very well today. Let's hope the 3rd graders have as much success tomorrow. Our students were very well behaved today. I know the 4th graders appreciated it.

If any parents are interested in helping out with this year's 4th Grade Recognition Program, there will be a meeting tomorrow evening at the Poland Library. Information was sent home yesterday from Mrs. Kluchar. In addition, a meeting will take place Thursday, April 22nd at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland Library to begin planning for Staff Appreciation Week. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Klase.

Mark your calendars! We'll have another "Walk Home from School Day" on Friday, May 7th. Information will be sent home soon.
Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

A Quiet Week!

It will be an exceptionally quiet week as we prepare our 3rd and 4th graders for the Ohio Achievement Tests. Can you feel the excitement? We all look forward to Friday when I can pack them up and send them on their way. I am referring to the tests, not the children! Please make sure you speak to your child about the importance of being "extra" quite this week. Our older students will certainly appreciate it.

If you have a student taking tests this week, please be sure he or she gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast each day.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Thank You!

Wow! Last night's Family Health Night was a HUGE success. I would like to acknowledge and thank those who really made the night possible. I will begin with Tom, Vince and the entire Sirna family for their extreme generosity. Sirna and Sons provided an incredible amount of delicious fruit and vegetables that our guests really enjoyed. The baskets they provided were also a big hit! Thank you Sirna family.

The House of Speed, Pizza Hut, Edible Arrangements and the Home Depot also made last night's event memorable for our students. Former PITT quarterback, Bill Stull, joined us, too. We all wish him the very best of luck as he prepares to enter the NFL. Good luck Bill!

I would like to thank members of our staff for their help, too. Poland's Food Service Director, Barb Dorbish, was instrumental in pulling Family Health Night off. Her willingness to adjust her busy schedule and participate is deeply appreciated. Our school's cook, Mrs. Frazier, was helpful, too. Thank you both. Mrs. Gesacion, Miss Gura, Ms. Vasko, Mrs. Kaschak and Mrs. Hernon were also kind enough to attend and participate. Their support speaks volumes for our building. Our school's nurse, Mrs. Fedor, was unable to attend, but was very supportive and helpful in putting the event together. PSHS's Jenny Fedor and Kayleigh Lavorini were nice enough to join us, too. These two girls volunteered their time and helped make over 85 "healthy" pizzas. Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Sofranec and our entire custodial staff for their help. These are often the unsung heroes of events like this. Thanks guys!

Family Health Night!

Family Health Night is quickly approaching. All kindergarten students, 4th graders and parents have been invited back to school for an exciting night. I hope our guests like fruit and vegetables because we have received a ton! We have apples, oranges, grapes, cucumbers, blood oranges, strawberries, blueberries, gold raspberries, cantaloupes, papaya and even pummelos. Thanks you Sirna & Sons! For those more comfortable eating pizza, we will have you covered, too. Thanks to Pizza Hut everyone child will have the opportunity to make and eat his/her own pizza.

Please plan on attending tomorrow's PTO Meeting. It will take place in Room 102 and begin at 9:00 a.m.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Todays News!

Keep your eyes on WKBN and WYTV tonight for a story about our courtyard's latest addition. Representatives from the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley were on hand this morning to officially open our school's new arbor. It was complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony, too.

Thursday's PTO Meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. Please plan on attending. We have quite a bit to discuss and value your input. Family Health Night will also take place on Thursday. I'd love to see more kindergarten students turn in reservation forms. It's not too late!

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Welcome Back!

It was nice to see so many smiling faces this morning. It won't take long for everyone to get back into a routine. The good news is that the end is near! It will be June before you know it.

Great news! Poland North Elementary School has received a $500.00 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. I'll be sure to put it to good use in our courtyard.

WKBN will here tomorrow to cover the "grand opening" of our school's new arbor. Members of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley will be here, too. Thanks to the $2,000 grant awarded to our school, we were able to purchase everything we needed to build the arbor.

Look for pictures soon.

Thanks,
Mr. Masucci

Woohoo!

Spring Break has arrived! Enjoy the holiday and upcoming week. If you happen to be traveling, be safe. I look forward to seeing everyone back at school on April 12th.

During the break, we'll put the final touches on the arbor in the courtyard and finalize plans for a pond. Our school will be working with Pondscape to provide our students with an amazing area to appreciate nature and wildlife.

Happy Easter!

Mr. Masucci
