For their assignment this week, the boys and girls were to write a kind note to their parent and leave it in a place that they would find it. It was so nice to hear about the notes that many of you received. Some notes are still not found, so if you didn't get one keep looking for yours.

Today the students are bringing home a pink informational sheet about PTO. On February 1st, our PTO will be having a Give-Back Night at Chili's Restaurant from 4:00-10:00. Chili's will be giving 15% of total sales to North's PTO. Please bring the flyer with you to the restaurant next Wednesday so that your sale will count. Also, our next PTO meeting will be held on February 2nd at 9:00 am. Beau Weaver, a Poland School Board member, will be here to answer any questions you may have concerning the upcoming levy. Today was an exciting day for 8 lucky North students. They had lunch at Pizza Hut and rode there in style! A black SUV limo picked the group up at 11:00 and drove us to the restaurant. The 8 students were top sellers for our PTO fundraiser in the Fall. After our pizza, wings, bread sticks, and salad, the limo whisked us back to school. It was a fun-filled afternoon for all of us.

It was great to see how many students enjoyed the snow this weekend! Many built snowmen and went sled riding but the big winner was having a snowball fight! My family enjoyed some sled riding and snowboarding minus me. The cold temperatures are not my favorite.

We have 1 more chapter to read in our book, Frankly, Frannie Doggy Day Care. The main character, Frannie and her best friend Elliott, caused some trouble for her family. They took her aunt's dog to the vet's office by themselves and the dog got loose causing chaos. By luck, their situation actually helped Frannie's Aunt Magoo get a deal selling her sock dolls at a toy store. We will find out Frannie's consequence and if she can officially become a vet in our last chapter.

The weekend looks like a good opportunity for building a snowman, going sledding, or having a snowball fight. It has been about 11 months seen we have had this chance, so enjoy the snow fun if you can.

The book sale will be held on February 8th and 9th. Each homeroom has a time designated to them for shopping. Our kick-off week for the riddles was fun! The students looked forward to their grade's turn to answer the riddle. We had 21 winners for the week! They each received a Chick-fil-A coupon for their creative answers. The "Riddle Box" will make another appearance in February. Ask your child about some of the riddles they heard this week.
We discussed the significance of Monday's holiday during our morning announcements. Many students shared why Martin Luther King Jr. was a hero for bringing equality to many. Enjoy the weekend.

The Riddle Box is back! The students were quite excited about the idea of answering riddles. One week of each month will be our 'riddle week'. Each day of that week, a grade is given a riddle after our morning announcements. Their answer needs to be written down and put into the Riddle Box before lunch. The winners are then announced the following morning. Each winner receives a coupon for their creative thinking!

Our new "Act of Kindness" was assigned today. The students are to help carry in groceries for a parent, grandparent, or neighbor. While discussing this during our announcements, a student asked if they could carry in something else other than groceries. He had suggested sporting equipment or suitcases. It is nice to see the students thinking beyond just what is mentioned. I encouraged them all to complete this easy task, helping with whatever needs carried in the house.

The students are enjoying a new book this week, Frankly, Frannie Doggy Day Care by AJ Stern. Frannie is a young girl desperate for a job with an office. She comes up with a "fantastical" plan to become a veterinarian and her best friend Elliott will be her secretary. Her big problem is convincing her parents that she should quit school and work in a vet's office! There are more problems that lie ahead for this ambitious girl.

Our new Character Trait from Chick-Fil-A was introduced this week. This month's trait is self-control, choosing to do what you should do, not what you want to do. Losing self-control can happen to all of us. Whether it is eating healthy or following the rules of a game. We discussed the importance of displaying this trait and how it can often times bring about other traits such as respect, responsibility, and patience. This trait can also be very helpful to us as we achieve our New Year's Resolutions!

The temperatures are finally proving it is Winter. I reminded the students this morning to wear winter coats, hats, and gloves. They will be going outside for recess as long as the temperature, with the wind chill, is 20 degrees or higher. A pair of boots may be needed if there is snow on the ground to let the students use as much of the playground as possible.

Happy 2012! It is nice to be back into our school routine after the Holiday rush! Hope everyone enjoyed time with family, friends and did not eat too much! This month is one of my favorites for being in school! Routines are established, there is a calm in the air, and students are ready to move forward with their learning. Our Winter Festival was a success! I want to extend a BIG thank you to all the parents who made the day so enjoyable for our students. The students made a frame, an ornament, and a snowman. An obstacle course, snowman ring toss, and "Tic-tac-snow" were played for us to burn off some energy. All enjoyed a snowman sugar cookie and hot chocolate while listening to The Polar Express. Pictures were taken today during the festivities. These will be making their way home on Thursday. WKBN was here filming our Winter Festival so be sure to tune in tonight for the local news. It looks as if this will become an annual event!

Today the High School Seminary Singers performed at our school. The program began with traditional Holiday songs with the students dressed in their choir robes. The program ended with contemporary songs along with a guest appearance by "Elvis". It was such a treat to have them visit and also to see the former North students.

Our 1st Winter Festival will be held tomorrow afternoon. The students will rotate between 5 stations set up throughout the school. All 3rd and 4th Graders need to bring hats, gloves, or scarves for their picture to be taken. Our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Graders will be having their picture taken with a "special guest". I look forward to a fun-filled afternoon!

Our "Operation Stay Warm" was a success! The Act of Kindness assignment collected 35 winter coats to be donated to a local elementary school. The students had such pride in their donations. A few in fact had to show me the coat they put in the box. How nice to instill this character trait in our students. Mrs. Weimer delivered the coats and the school's gratitude was overwhelming. The generosity from North was again incredible. Thank you to all who donated!

Our Kindergarten classes looked comfortable and cozy today. They were all snug in their pajamas and slippers as they celebrated "Polar Express Day". The students even brought a pillow or a stuffed friend to enjoy the day with them. While watching the movie, they snacked on cookies and milk. Oh, what fun to be in Kindergarten!

Today, the students had the opportunity to shop at our Santa's Workshop. The PTO provided many reasonable gifts for students to purchase. The items ranged from Mom, Dad, and Grandparent gifts to gifts for the family pet. S & T was here selling various Poland items. The students will have an opportunity to shop again tomorrow and a make-up day is scheduled for Friday morning. Many thanks to Mrs. Klase, Mrs. Szolek, and the many volunteers that helped with this Holiday shopping day!

The musical notes of the High School Wind Ensemble filled our gym today. Mr. Olesko and Mr. Hvizdos along with their band students paid a visit to our school. North was treated to many Holiday songs along with the theme to Pirates of the Caribbean. The High School students showed us the various instruments and how each one sounds. Five lucky North students had the opportunity to perform with the Ensemble, helping with percussion. The music was enjoyed by all and definitely put us in the Holiday spirit.

Our 3rd Graders had their "Holiday Happening" today for parents and grandparents. The program started with a poem that spelled out "Merry Christmas" followed by some Holiday songs. The final part of the event was a craft project. The students and their special person made a snowman wreath. Thank you to all who attended.

Today, the students brought home a paper about "Operation Stay Warm" that our PTO has started. They are asking for gently worn, clean winter coats that your family has outgrown. These coats will be donated to a local elementary school that is in need. There is a box located in our lobby where they can be dropped off. On December 16th, the coats will be delivered to the elementary school. I will be talking to the students on Monday about this community project, as it will be our Act of Kindness assignment for the week.

This weekend is our last few days of our fundraiser at Five Below, next to Target. If you plan on shopping there, please hand the flier to the cashier so that 10% of your sale is donated to North. Thank you.

The students are enjoying a new book about friendship, Ivy and Bean by Annie Barrows and Sophie Blackall. The book is the first in the series and explains how Ivy and Bean became friends. Bean's mom tries to encourage her to become friends with the new girl in the neighborhood, Ivy. Bean wants nothing to do with her because she looks boring! When Bean's plan to trick her sister fails, Ivy comes to her rescue. We will continue to read this book to find out if a lasting friendship can form.

Last month, Armstrong came to North and filmed a Kids Corner episode with our 3rd Grade students. Miss Krista read a story that was set in the Civil War era titled Vinnie and Abraham by Dawn Fitzgerald. After the story, the students were encouraged to create their own statue using flour, water and salt. This episode will air December 5th-December 18th on Channel 20. The times were sent home today with the 3rd Grade students.

The Act of Kindness assignment this week needs your permission to use the phone. I have told the kids to call a Grandparent or relative and tell them how much they mean to them. Call Grandpa and say: "I really like spending time with you." Or call Grandma and say: "Thanks for letting me bake cookies with you. I really enjoy it." Kind words can mean so much!

We kept with our character trait of 'Generosity' today and read the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. In this beautifully written story, the tree is continuously giving of itself to the boy. It begins with the tree giving of its' leaves, apples, and branches to swing from and this brings the tree great happiness. As the boy ages, the tree gives all it has until it is a stump that cannot give anything more. All the tree has left is a place to sit down. The boy takes this offer and the tree is happy once more. It is a well-written story that portrays our character trait throughout the book.

This morning I was preparing the students for the December character trait of 'Generosity'. The students helped me define the trait as "giving to others". This does not have to be a gift that is bought at a store but could be something such as love or friendship. I shared a story of a girl, Shifra Mincer, who began her generosity in the 6th grade. She began by volunteering at a homeless shelter with her teacher and students from her class. Her generosity grew to mending the clothes of the homeless that were torn or ripped. She then began making pillows for babies in the hospital and the elderly. Shifra willingly gave away her gift of sewing to others to make their day. What an inspiration!

Today we enjoyed the book If You Take a Mouse to the Movies by Laura Numeroff. The mouse was taken to a movie theater and asked for some popcorn. This popcorn started a sequence of events for him and the boy which led them back to the movie theater. There are many other books by this author that your children may enjoy. In fact some students may be bringing some of these books home tomorrow after library.
Today, another Scrip gift card order form came home. Many were asking for a repeat of this sale closer to the holidays. The sale will end in time for you to receive the gift cards before Winter Break.

Welcome back after a well-eaten and well-rested break. The students this morning shared their favorite dish that they ate for Thanksgiving. Pumpkin pie was a big winner with the school. Many of the students went to see new movie releases this weekend so we turned our morning into a movie critic time. The students held up 'thumbs-up' or 'thumbs-down' depending on if they liked the movie or not. It seems as if The Muppet movie was a huge hit with those that saw it. I look forward to seeing it with my family.

The Act of Kindness Assignment for this week is to say "Good morning", "Good afternoon", or "Have a nice day" to their bus driver. They were told to make sure to say it with a smile!

I enjoyed hearing the notes of thanks that the students passed out as their Act of Kindness assignment. Most of the notes sent were because a family member helped with homework or sat and read a story with them. I encouraged the students to continue this assignment and show thanks to the person who prepares their feast this Thursday.

At the end of October, I blogged about classrooms making ornaments out of recycled materials for the Green Team. One of our very own classes won the contest and will receive a birdhouse. There were 417 ornaments turned in from 15 teachers across our county. Some of the school districts besides Poland that participated were Campbell, Canfield, and Struthers. The winning class for this contest is Mrs. Metzger's 1st Grade class. Congratulations to them! Their tree ornaments made from empty toilet paper rolls were a hit! They have graciously said they will be sharing the birdhouse with the school as it makes its way to our courtyard.

Our 1st graders celebrated their annual Pilgrim and Indian Day. The celebration involved many fun activities. The students enjoyed making vests, turkey magnets and coloring pages. At the tepee station, the students enjoyed some snacks while sitting on a blanket with friends. The students even decorated their own cookie with icing and sprinkles. It was a festive way to end the week. Thank you to all the parents that volunteered their time or donated items for this special day.

Our morning announcements have included a Magic Tree House book, Thanksgiving on Thursday by Mary Pope Osborne. As the characters, Jack and Annie, travel back to the 1st Thanksgiving, they realize that the Pilgrim children had many chores. Unfortunately, Jack and Annie do not know how to do the chores the Pilgrim way and are ruining the important holiday. We will find out next week if the first Thanksgiving feast will happen even with their help.

North is entered into a National can contest, the Great American Can Round-up. This contest begins today and continues through April 4th. The great news about saving our aluminum cans is that it counts for the National contest and our local Green Team contest. The National contest is awarding $1,000 per state winner and $5,000 for one National top recycling school winner. Please encourage family and friends to help North with this recycling effort. All cans can be dropped off at our custodian’s door next to the dumpster. Thank you for your help.

Welcome back after a wonderful weather weekend. Many of the students said they enjoyed a 'leaf jumping' weekend. What a perfect few days to be outside enjoying that activity! The students were given their kindness assignment today. They are to write a note of thanks to someone. This note can be to a family member for helping with homework or playing a game. The students can write a note of thanks to their teacher or bus driver. We will be talking about this assignment next Tuesday, November 22nd. What a great way to celebrate our way of showing gratitude.
Today is the American Red Cross Blood Drive. I sent home reminders on Friday if you made appointments or volunteered to work. Thank you for your help with this life-saving effort.

Armstrong Cable paid a visit to our school today. They read a book called, Vinnie and Abraham. The story was about a girl who started sculpting at a very young age and created a statue of Abraham Lincoln. One of her sculptures of Abraham Lincoln is still on display in Washington D.C. Quite an amazing story. The third graders then created their own sculptures that they will be bringing home. Thanks again to Armstrong and I will let you know when the episode will air on Channel 20.

The JJ Brothers were at our school today for an assembly. The 2 authors talked to the students about the importance of the writing process while incorporating lots of funny acts. The students had many laughs as they were taught about adjectives. Two of our 4th grade students were included in the program to stress the importance of spelling. The students will have an opportunity to purchase a few of their books if they choose. The order forms will be making their way home by tomorrow. Thanks to the PTO for providing this entertaining assembly!

Today, I had the pleasure of reading to all the 1st-4th grade classrooms during their library time. The 1st and 2nd graders enjoyed the story The Wall by Eve Bunting. It tells of a little boy and his father visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. They were looking for the boy's grandfather's name on the wall. After finding it, they did a rubbing of the name and left the boy's picture there in remembrance of the grandfather.
The 3rd and 4th graders heard the story, America's White Table by Margot Theis Raven. The book describes the tradition of setting a white table in honor of all the men and women who have served our country. The table is set with items and the importance of what they symbolize. The salt symbolizes the tears of the families and the empty chair symbolizes the missing soldiers who are not present. Ask your child about these books.

Last month, our 2nd grade students were treated to a story and craft by Armstrong Cable. This lesson will be airing on Channel 20 now though November 20th. The Kids Corner episode airs at different times and days. The 2nd grade students brought home a schedule of all the days and times. The kindness assignment for this week is to cheer someone up when you see them in a sad or bad mood. The students will have to be very observant of others to complete this assignment. I gave them some examples to help them understand. One of the examples was giving up the t.v. remote to Dad, if he has had a bad day at work, without him asking for it. Another idea is to ask an older brother/sister to play their favorite game if they need some cheering up. I look forward to hearing the successful stories on Friday.

Today, each student will be coming home with a YSU ticket voucher. This can be redeemed for 2 General Admission Women's regular season basketball home game. Yesterday our 1st through 4th grade classrooms were treated to a story time by the YSU girls' basketball team. Each class enjoyed a few stories, asked questions to the girls, and then were able to check out their library books. The YSU girls will return on Friday to treat our Kindergarten to their story time. We appreciate the time they spent with our North students. We wish the YSU girls luck as they begin their basketball season!

Today, the students are coming home with a paper about a new program sponsored by our PTO. It is called the SCRIP program. There are gift cards listed from various places. Each card sold, will donate a percentage to North's PTO. For example, I can buy a Barnes and Noble gift card for $25 and the school will receive 8.74% of the sale. The percentages our school will receive from each purchase is marked on the sheet. The program ends November 9th. The gift cards will be distributed a few weeks after that date. Please consider ordering a few gift cards and help the PTO raise additional money for North. Thank you!

Thank you for all who showed up today for our Halloween parade. I always enjoy seeing the unique costumes! The rain, thankfully, held off for us to stay dry. I encouraged the students, as they are trick-or-treating, to stay with the adult that is walking with them. I will be staying warm and passing out candy to all the trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood. Have a safe and fun evening.

The Act of Kindness assignment for the week is for the students to help with the dishes. To my surprise, many raised their hands to tell that they already do this as a chore at home. The students will be able to share more about this assignment on Friday.

On Monday, we will be celebrating Halloween in the afternoon. The parade will begin at 1:15 followed by the classroom parties. The students are to bring their costumes in a bag and they will change into them before the parade. Any make-up or face painting needs to be done at home before coming to school in the morning. Those students who have returned the permission slip will leave with the person designated. All other students will be dismissed as usual. Let's hope for sunshine so that our parade can be outside!

Today we had an assembly presented by the American Red Cross. Mr. Tim, along with his friend, Buddy, talked to us about the importance of adults donating blood. Every student will be coming home with information about how to register on-line for our Blood Drive on November 14th. The Red Cross will be here 2:00p.m.-7:00p.m. for all that would like to donate. Each person that donates helps save 3 people. The students who get a person to donate will be entered to win a Cleveland Cavaliers ticket. Thank you for your help with this very important cause.

The students have been enjoying a Jigsaw Jones Mystery book called The Case of the Spooky Sleepover. Jigsaw and his partner, Mila, are called into action to help a friend. Their friend, Ralphie, thinks his house is haunted. To help solve the case, Jigsaw spends the night at Ralphie's house and brings his trusty dog, Rags, along too. Soon the 3 of them will piece the clues together and discover whether Ralphie's house is truly haunted. If your child liked this story, the Jigsaw Jones series is a good way to encourage independent reading at home.

It is not too late to send in veteran's pictures. Please remember to put your child's name on the back of each picture so that they can be returned. Our "Hero Wall" is looking good!

Some of our classrooms decided to enter the "Design an Ornament" contest sponsored by the Green Team. The classrooms needed to brainstorm ideas for creating ornaments from reused materials. The classrooms chose to use a variety of materials such as cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, and items found in nature. The ornaments will be used to decorate Christmas trees at Fellows Riverside Gardens and other public locations. This is their creativity at its best!

This weekend was a perfect one to complete our 'Act of Kindness' assignment. Many students this morning told me how they helped rake leaves or pick up sticks. I told them there will be many more opportunities to continue spreading kindness with this assignment. The leaves at this point seem never ending.

Our 2nd grade classrooms were treated to a story and craft project presented by Armstrong Cable. The story session will air on Armstrong cable in 2 weeks. I will pass on details about the time and channel as soon as I receive them.

Our 3rd graders were busy this week creating 'pet rocks.' They painted rocks and added eyes, feathers, and pompoms to design their pet. Each student named their pet and wrote a short story about it in their journal. These pets will be making their way into your homes and the best thing about them is no clean-up or pet food to buy! That is my kind of pet!

Today, our first graders were treated to a 'Fire Prevention' assembly given by the Western Reserve Fire Department. Some students were lucky enough to dress up as a smoke detector and fire fighter to help with the presentation. The 1st graders went outside to see the fire truck and equipment. The program ended with the students singing the song "Stop, Drop, and Roll" to the firefighters.

Tomorrow is the last day to purchase raffle tickets for our bulldog yard signs. The winners will be announced during the lunch times. Bulldog Pride day on Friday. Please wear your Poland shirts or anything blue and white.

Last week, a paper went home with the students about a "Hero Wall" to honor past and present Veterans. It is North's way of saying 'thank you' to members of the military. The students are to bring in a picture of a Veteran with the bottom of the paper completed. The pictures can be of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or neighbors who is serving or has served in any military branch. I would like each student to have at least one Veteran honored on our "Hero Wall". The pictures are due by October 26th. Please make sure your child's name is on the back of each picture so that it can be returned. My goal is to have the wall complete so that it can be viewed by the parents attending the Halloween Parade on October 31st.

Today was our first "Breakfast of Champions." I had the pleasure this morning of having breakfast with 13 fourth graders. They successfully completed 100 addition problems in 5 minutes with a score of 95% or better. Our goal is to improve our math facts in all grade levels. Please review facts as often as possible so that your child can be successful. The third grade will be completing 50 addition and 50 subtraction problems this week for their chance to earn their breakfast. Good luck!

Glad to see everyone is well-rested after our long weekend. Our Act of Kindness assignment is very appropriate for this time of year. The students are asked to clean up a neighbor's or relative's yard by raking leaves or picking up sticks. This will be an easy task after all the strong winds we had this past weekend. Mrs. Hruby even volunteered her yard in case there was someone looking for some leaves to rake! Encourage your child to get outside and enjoy the fresh air while doing a good deed!

Today the students enjoyed the story Incredible Ned by Bill Maynard and Frank Remkiewicz. Ned had a problem, every word that he spoke appeared over his head or next to him. This caused no work to get done in his classroom because the students had much more fun watching Ned's words appear. The parents, teachers, school nurse and principal could not fix his problem. He was ordered to "say nothing at all or go stand in the hall." Finally, the art teacher came to his rescue and gave Ned pencils, paper, and paints. Ned's pictures that were in his head, did not appear above him or next to him, but instead appeared on his paper. His problem was solved by letting his creativeness out!

Did you know that it took Thomas Edison 10,000 tries to invent a working light bulb? Today, we talked about our monthly character trait, creativeness, and related it to inventions. The students heard about the many inventions of Thomas Edison such as the phonograph and his creation of the first silent film. They also learned the lesson to 'not give up' on your creativity, it may take many tries before you succeed. Ask your child the name of the state that Thomas Edison was born in?

Our October character trait is creativity, using your imagination to do something unique. We discussed the possible was to show your creativity such as building legos, drawing, painting, or writing poetry. Today we highlighted Norman Rockwell for his creativeness and inspiration expressed in his art. I shared some background information and showed the students some pieces of his artwork. Throughout this week, we will continue to focus on this trait by meeting other people that are famous for being creative.

Today, we finished our book, Miss Daisy Is Crazy. The students in the story, successfully read their 1 million pages, won their video game arcade party, and had the principal dress in a gorilla suit. As for Miss Daisy, she continued to have trouble with the school subjects and needed the help of her 2nd grade students to explain things to her. The students really felt sorry for her and hope that next year's students will help her succeed!

I heard about many fun games that were played throughout the past week as part of 'Family Game Night'. The students enjoyed sharing the game they played along with who they played with. Later this week, when the rain returns, may be a perfect time to plan another game night!

On Monday,the PTO will be selling raffle tickets to win a paw print yard sign. There are 2 yard signs available to win, one for the Kindergarten-2nd grades and another for 3rd - 4th grades. These are the same paw prints that were raffled off at our tailgate. During lunch time, the students will be able to buy tickets 1 for $1 or 6 for $5. Tomorrow evening at 6:30 will be our October PTO meeting. We will be discussing the Halloween party and parade, electing our Nominating Committee, and voting on changes to the By-laws. I will also be asking for volunteers to help on November 14th for the American Red Cross Blood Drive. Our 3rd graders can breathe a sigh of relief. Today they spent the morning taking the Ohio Reading Achievement Test. The test is compiled of stories with multiple choice and short answer questions. Thank you for making sure they had a good night's sleep and a good breakfast this morning. They were wide-eyed, but a little nervous, as they arrived at school. I am sure they did very well and tried their best. They will be taking another version of the Reading Test and Math Test in the Spring.

Rain, rain, go away! Another day with rain sets the tone for our Act of Kindness assignment this week. The students are to organize a family game night before Friday. Today, we discussed our kindness act assignment. Some of you were quite lucky to be the recipient of such nice compliments. A few students shared how nice their mother looked, others complimented a classmate. All that shared said that the person had a smile on their face as they were complimented. How simple what a few, kind, spoken words can do to a person's attitude.
The students came home today with the October newsletter from PTO. Please take a few minutes to read it over so that you are aware of some dates and events that are happening in our building. I had the pleasure today of visiting two classrooms. This morning I was in Mrs. Wittenauer's class listening to "Reader's Theater". The students were divided into 3 groups and each student was given a part to read. The expression the students used was quite impressive. As your child reads aloud, please have them practice this skill. It makes reading come alive!
In Mrs. Gunn's class, we enjoyed a few stories after recess. Ask your child about 'someday' not being on the calendar! After the stories, the students were treated to one of Mrs. Gunn's yummy recipes! Such a great way to end the day!

Today many of the students left with Box Top contest forms to complete. The Box Tops can be found on many different products such as cereals, granola bars, and sandwich baggies. You need to cut the Box Top off the product box or label and tape to the contest sheet. For every Box Top turned in, our PTO receives 10 cents. The contest is continuing through October, so please ask for more contest sheets if you need them. After the contest, hold on to future Box Tops for the next contest. Thank you for your help.

The students in the book decide to pull their money together to buy the school. Their goal is to turn it into a video game arcade. To their delight, Miss Daisy thinks it is a splendid idea! Happy Monday to you. It is hard to believe the weekend is behind us once again. The Monday kindness assignment was given to the students this morning. Their 'random act' is to compliment 3 different people and really mean it by Friday. we discussed the meaning of compliment and how someone would know that you meant it. The students shared that you need to look at the person and be specific as to why you are complimenting them. Compliments can be paid to any person, anywhere, and for any reason. It is always nice to hear something positive to put a smile on your face. Here's hoping you get one of the compliments given out this week!

This week I began reading a chapter book to the students during our morning announcements. The book is called Miss Daisy Is Crazy by Dan Gutman. Miss Daisy is a second grade teacher who does not know a lot, at least that is what she tells the students! She has trouble with arithmetic, spelling, and reading. Her students are always helping and explaining things to her. Mr. Klutz, the principal, even made a visit to her classroom. Ask your child what was special about Mr. Klutz! As we continue reading the book, Miss Daisy will continue to need help from her students and slowly their perception of school will change.

Today we are proudly displaying our pinwheels for International Day of Peace. This project began with 2 Art Teachers from Florida. North students made their own colorful pinwheels last week in art class. This morning the day began with the students giving me their definition of peace and then reading the story, Finding Peace by Amy Ayers. In the book, a young girl asks friends and family what peace means to them. Some said, a walk along the beach, flying a kite, or reading a good book. Our students were encouraged to talk in their classrooms and at home what peace means for each of them. So if you get a chance to drive by the school this afternoon, you will see our pinwheels displayed along with millions of others in the world.

This afternoon we had our annual "Kindergarten Tea". Mrs. Kellgren, our PTO Secretary, hosted the event and had an opportunity to speak with the Kindergarten parents about the role of our PTO. Soon after, our Kindergarten students performed two poems and a song for the parents. We concluded the "tea", by enjoying cookies and a drink. Thank you to all who were able to attend. A special thank you to the parents who volunteered to bake, the goodies were just what the students needed!

Today was our first "Random Act of Kindness" assignment. A third grade student helped explain the meaning as "doing something nice for someone without them asking." The students' assignment is to help make breakfast, snack, or dinner. We discussed some possible ways to help such as, stirring or mixing, setting the table, or measuring. On Friday, the students will share what they did and who received their 'kindness act'. I will be giving the students a kindness assignment every Monday. Be watching for upcoming details. You never know when you will be the recipient of our assignment!

Chick-fil-a sponsors a Core Essentials program to teach character traits. Each month, a different trait will be discussed. For the month of September, the trait is knowledge. During morning announcements, we discussed the meaning of knowledge and that there is no age limit for gaining more of it. Tomorrow the students will be sharing something new that they learned. This can be a new way to tie shoes or throw a ball. Knowledge is a powerful tool!
The students will be bringing home PTO fundraiser packets. Our PTO provides many events and programs through their fundraising efforts. Please take some time to look through the items and if you are able, please support the fundraiser. Please have all your order forms turned in by September 26th.

Welcome back! It was great to see all the smiling faces this morning. They were still smiling as they were leaving, so that was a good sign. Report cards are heading home today with your child. It is hard to believe we are at the end of another school year! North has had many changes this year and we made it though them all with grace. We are lucky to have such wonderful students, parents, and staff. I know we all have Summer on our minds right now (including me) but I am anticipating a wonderful year next year. Fun Day was a HUGE success! The "Minute to Win It" theme was a winner. Each classroom traveled to stations to complete the activity within a minute. One of the games was trying to get a cookie from your forehead to your mouth (Face the Cookie). Another was called 'A Bit Dicey' where you had to stack dice on top of a tongue depressor while holding it in your mouth. There were a few stations that are 'regulars' for North Fun Day such as the Bounce Arounds and Dunk Tank. Believe it or not, I did go in the Dunk Tank (only for 4th grade) and was relieved when Miss Rider took over! Thank you to Mrs. Klase for a well-planned Fun Day. Also, thank you to the parent volunteers that showed up today, there were over 40 here!!! What a turn-out! We are lucky to have such wonderful parents!

Mrs. Gunn's class held a "worm race" today. It was quite a feat trying to line up 20 worms in their respective lanes, but it was accomplished. After many minutes of cheering and 'hold your breath' excitement, a winner was announced. Eli the worm, owned by Justin, took 1st place. Eli is 9 inches long and was in Lane #3. Congratulations to all the worms that entered the race!
Tomorrow is Fun Day. All volunteers should be at the school by 8:15 to help set-up the stations, it will begin at 9:00 a.m. Each class is designated a specific color shirt to wear. The following is a list of each classroom's color:

The rain put a little damper on the 3rd Grade Community walk today. Luckily, part of the "community" came to them at the school. Annette from the Poland Library packed up her things and visited the school with books and games. After eating a "picnic lunch" in their classrooms and the rain stopped, they put on their walking shoes and headed to Friendly's. The students enjoyed their ice cream before heading back to school.
Tomorrow, Handel's will be hosting a fundraising event for Relay for Life. Team North will donate 20% of all sales to the Relay for Life. Please stop by between 3:00and 9:00 p.m. with your flier. Thanks for your support.

Our 3rd Graders traveled to Lowellville today to meet their Pen pals. They began writing to their Pen pals in October under code names. Each class met their Pen pal in a different way. One class at North made 2 puzzle pieces and sent a puzzle piece to their Pen pal. Upon arriving today, they had to match their puzzle piece to the Lowellville 3rd grader's puzzle piece. The other class at North received postcards from their Pen pals with clues as to how they would dress or what would be on their desk. After meeting one another, they each shared a picnic lunch and played on the playground. Here's to new friendships!

Wow, what a day! The weather could not have been better for our Kindergarten picnic. The students enjoyed games, lunch, and free play at the Boardman Park. Thank you to all the wonderful parents that helped with this special day.
Our 4th Grade met their soon-to-be principal, Mr. Kempers at the High School. They were treated to a concert by the 5th Grade band and then had a question and answer session with Mr. Kempers. The afternoon was spent at the bowling alley with the entire Poland 4th Grade. This is an opportunity to meet new friends that will be going to McKinley next fall. Again, the North students were well-behaved and I am very proud of them! Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine!

Last week, a paper went home about Relay for Life themed baskets. The students are asked to donate an item that would create a themed basket per grade level. These items are due Monday, June 6th. Our 2nd Grade returned from their all-day field trip with smiles! They had the pleasure of visiting some of Youngstown's most popular spots. The Butler Art Museum was their first stop. This is a great place to visit over Summer break. If you purchase postcards in the gift shop, your child can go on a "treasure hunt" to find the artwork within the museum. The second stop was the Arms Museum to admire the antique furniture. They then ventured to YSU's campus to enjoy lunch. The day concluded with a visit to the Planetarium on campus. The 2nd grade students should sleep well tonight after their adventures today!

Welcome back from an outstanding, extended Holiday weekend. Hope you spent lots of time with family and friends. The weather sure cooperated for outdoor activities.
Today, the students were given the "Act of Kindness" of carrying in grocery bags. It was so nice to see that many of the students had already done this and on a regular basis. Encourage your child to help a neighbor or friend with this act also.
Tonight is our 4th Grade Recognition. The event begins at 6:00. Please plan on being here early to have your picture taken. The evening will begin with our 4th graders singing and then receiving awards. After dinner, we will watch a short DVD program of the students. I am looking forward to the special night ahead.

Our 3rd graders had the pleasure of going to Wagon Trails Animal Farm yesterday. The weather was very cooperative and the students really enjoyed themselves. Both Mrs. Wittenauer and Mrs. Hay commented on how well-behaved the kids were as well as the director of Wagon Trails.
The tomato and green pepper plants made their way to your homes today-hopefully safely. I encouraged the students to start a "garden" of their own and take on the responsibility of caring for the plants. Their "garden" can be just these 2 plants re potted in a larger container or adding more plants to make it a more prosperous garden. Good luck with growing. I look forward to hearing about the "vegetables of labor".

The school was treated to an amazing performance by the Seminary Singers. The performers consist of 9th-12th graders at Poland High School. They performed group songs as well as some duets and solos. They are all very talented and North always enjoys their show. It is always nice to see our past students that are a part of Seminary Singers. Yea for the North Alumni!

Today our 4th grade took their annual field trip to the Juvenile Justice Center. Mr. Smith took us on a tour of the center and talked a lot about choices that the students make. He also stressed the importance of listening and respecting parents. It is quite an enlightening day. Thank you for the parents that were able to join us. Our 1st graders were the first class at North to visit the 'OH Wow Science Center' in Youngstown. They were treated to a day of fun, hands-on activities.
